Warrenton,VI : One killed in wrong-way crash on I-95 in Stafford on October, Thursday 12th 2017

State police are investigating a fatal morning crash that closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Stafford County for close to five hours.

The wreck happened in the southbound lanes just north of Centerport Parkway at the 136 mile marker around 2:30 a.m.

A 2003 Dodge Van that had entered I-95 at the Centreport Parkway exit, heading north in the southbound lanes, said state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Just north of the exit, the van struck a southbound 2007 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer traveling in the center lane.

Both drivers were taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where the van’s driver died, Geller said. She did not release any details on the driver pending notification of family.

The crash closed the southbound lanes until about 7:15 a.m., with traffic rerouted at the 140 mile marker.

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
