Everett, WA : Driver killed after crashing into DOT truck on Interstate 5 in Everett early Monday, February 29, 2016
One person was killed early Monday after driving at full speed into the back of a state Department of Transportation truck on Interstate 5 near Everett, the Washington State Patrol reports.
The crash occurred about 3 a.m. as a DOT crew was working along the southbound lanes of the freeway near the state Route 526 interchange.
An SUV heading south slammed into the back of a DOT truck that had a huge flashing arrow on the back warning drivers to move over for the crews working ahead.
The DOT worker in the truck immediately got out to check on the person who hit him, but the SUV burst into flames.
The worker grabbed a fire extinguisher from his rig, but the fire was too great to put out, the State Patrol says.
Firefighters arrived on scene and extinguished the blaze. They discovered the body of one person in the SUV, and they believe the driver was alone in the vehicle.
Troopers remain at the scene, and one lane is still closed as they wrap up their invesitgation of the deadly crash.
The State Patrol says it appears the SUV driver never slowed down and crashed into the DOT truck at freeway speed. They said they'll likely never know why it happened.
