Authorities have identified the man killed Friday after his pickup struck a tractor near Manchester.

Eric S. Smith, 72, of Manchester, died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol.

Investigators said Smith at about 7 a.m. Friday was driving westbound on 165th Street about one-half mile from the intersection with 200th Avenue. Smith “sideswiped” a tractor driven eastbound by Beau Vaske, 20, of Manchester, according to the report.

Smith’s vehicle struck a manure applicator and came to rest in a ditch on the north side of the road, according to the report. Troopers said Vaske was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
