Corning, CA : Two Corning men were injured in a collision on Wednesday, July 19, 2017
Two Corning men were injured in a collision at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday on Gallagher Avenue at Edith Avenue, and one was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Driver Miguel Ramirez, 21, had minor injuries and passenger Daniel D. Martinez, 23, had major injuries, according to a press release Thursday from the California Highway Patrol.
Ramirez was driving a 1990 Toyota pickup north on Edith Avenue approaching Gallagher at an unknown speed as Michael Messmer, 18, of Corning, who was not injured in the collision, was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla west on Gallagher, approaching Edith at about 55 mph.
Due to Ramirez’s level of intoxication, he failed to stop at the intersection, which has a stop sign, and continued into the intersection. Messmer, who did not have a stop sign, saw Ramirez’s vehicle and attempted to brake, but was unable to avoid a collision with the front of his vehicle hitting the right side of the Toyota.
The impact caused Ramirez’s vehicle to overturn, coming to rest on its roof in a drainage ditch.
Martinez was transported via private party to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital for treatment of major injuries, but was transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for a higher level of care due to his injuries, the release said.
Ramirez was taken to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released into CHP custody. He was booked into Tehama County Jail on the felony charge of DUI, causing injury to another and misdemeanor charge of driving on suspended license. Bail was $76,000.
The collision remains under investigation.
