Rapid City, SD : Man arrested for DUI after van crashes into Ice Arena on Tuesday July 29th 2014

A Porcupine man was arrested Saturday for DUI after the speeding van he was driving crashed into Roosevelt Ice Arena at 235 Waterloo St.

According to Rapid City police, witnesses estimated the van was traveling approximately 60 mph when it hit a drainage ditch, launching it airborne and into the building at around 9:30 a.m.

Stanley Bearnose, 44, was arrested for DUI, driving with a suspended license and no proof of insurance and was taken to jail, according to Rapid City Police spokesperson Tarah Heupel. She said she was not aware of any injuries.

Doug Lowe, recreation division manager for Rapid City, said Monday there is a small crack in the building that a structural engineer likely will assess after the city examines it.

"We're going to have one of our city engineers check it out first and then go from there," he said.

Lowe said it was too early to say what repairs might cost and that the arena remains open.
