Shelton, WA : Deputy injured in Mason County crash on Sunday morning, Nov 1, 2015

A Mason County sheriff's deputy totalled his patrol vehicle and suffered a nasty gash on his head when he crashed while en route to a burglary call in the Grapeview area.

Deputy Nathan Smith was on his way to a possible burglary in progress Sunday morning when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed in the 17000 block of State Route 3, according to the sheriff's office.

The 38-year-old deputy suffered a serious cut on his head and was taken by ambulance to Harrison Hospital in Bremerton for treatment. No one else was injured in the crash and Smith has been released from the hospital.

The sheriff's office says it was raining hard at the the time of the crash, and there were areas of standing water along the highway.

In a Monday news release, Mason County Sheriff Casey Salisbury said Smith's accident "should be a warning to everyone during the downpours that all drivers need to be aware of standing water on the roadways; that even professionally trained drivers can fall victim to harsh weather hazards."

The Washington State Patrol responded and conducted a traffic accident investigation.
