S. Palm Canyon is open again in Palm Springs after a woman was struck by a car Thursday night o closing the road in both directions while police investigated.

She was struck about 8:45 p.m. on South Palm Canyon Drive at Avenida Palmera, according to Palm Springs police.

Paramedics rushed the woman to a local hospital for treatment to injuries that were life threatening.

Police did not have an update on her condition Friday morning.

Police shut down the road between Morongo Road and Avenida Olanch. Traffic was being detoured onto parallel streets until the road reopened at about 2:30 a.m.

It's not the first time a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in the area. Area residents typically blame the collisions on the area's lack of lighting lighting and pedestrian traffic related to the neighborhood's homeless population, hotels and businesses.

On December 15 2014, a woman was killed after being struck by a Kia Sedona. The collision happened about 10:50 p.m. and roads were closed until 5 a.m. the following day.

On Nov. 30, 2012, La Quinta resident Corey Holley, 38, was crossing Palm Canyon on a bicycle when he was struck and killed by a southbound Ford Thunderbird.

This year eight people died in 2017, most recently on Aug. 18 when a man was killed in a hit-and-run crash at Avenue 43 and Calhoun Street in Indio.

Drivers pulled over and cooperated with investigators in most of the collisions.

In 2016, nearly 30 people died after being struck by vehicles across the Coachella Valley. That was roughly 3 percent of the statewide pedestrian fatalities last year, according to statistics from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Desert traffic officials have launched multiple campaigns to reduce pedestrian fatalities.

The most prominent efforts include the Coachella Valley Association of Government's allocation of funds for projects that improve pedestrian safety, and a multi-agency campaign that includes Interstate 10 billboards encouraging
