Bradford, PA : Teen injured in South Kendall Avenue crash on Wednesday morning, October 5, 2016

A Bradford teen suffered minor injuries in a crash into a utility pole on South Kendall Avenue about 7:25 Wednesday morning.

Foster Township Police Chief Tom Munn said a full-sized pick-up truck driven by Dawson Mealy, 17, of 342 Bolivar Drive, was traveling north on South Kendall Avenue when Mealy became distracted by a bug in the cab of the truck. The truck veered off the road in the 300 block of South Kendall, got on the wet grass and went out of control, sliding sideways, then counterclockwise into a utility pole. After striking the pole, the vehicle began rotating clockwise, at one point flipping onto its passenger side.

“The grass was damp with dew,” Munn explained. “When the tires hit it, it was like ice.”
Both Mealy and a passenger in the truck, 15-year-old Amaya Gonzalez, were wearing seatbelts and suffered minor injuries. Both were taken by Bradford City Ambulance to Bradford Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The chief said the airbags in the truck deployed, “and it probably saved their lives.”

The truck had severe damage. The rear passenger tire and drive train were ripped off, and the frame was sheared nearly completely in half where the cab and bed of the truck meet, Munn said.
The utility pole was not broken, Munn said.

Witnesses said the truck was not speeding at the time of the crash. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
Munn said the crash is still under investigation, and any decision on potential charges would come when the investigation is complete.

Members of the Rew Volunteer Fire Department assisted police at the scene.
