Newport News,VI :One dead after crash on I-64 near J. Clyde Morris Boulevard, state police say on June, Sunday 4th 2017

A person died in a crash on Interstate 64 east Sunday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police. The crash blocked traffic as emergency crews responded to the scene, and some lanes are still blocked more than an hour after the accident.

The crash happened around 5:11 p.m. near the J. Clyde Morris Boulevard exit, mile marker 258, police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya.

Anaya said an SUV lost control and overturned. One person died and others were hurt, Anaya said. Police are investigating the crash.

The crash caused delays on I-64, blocking all lanes on I-64 east for close to an hour.

As of about 6:20 p.m., only one lane on I-64 east is open. One lane on I-64 west is closed.

Earlier, all east and west lanes were closed because of the crash. A Nightingale helicopter arrived at the crash scene around 5:40 p.m. and left around 6 p.m.

The helicopter landed on the eastbound side of I-64. While the helicopter was on the ground, police stopped all traffic.
