New Orleans ,LA : Man steals taxi on Canal Street, crashes a block away on Thursday afternoon ,july 2nd 2015

A would-be thief's attempt at stealing a taxicab on Canal Street met an abrupt end Thursday afternoon (July 2) when he crashed the cab into several vehicles and snarled traffic on the busy thoroughfare.

Cabdriver Edy Cadet said he parked his van taxi in front of the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, 500 Canal St. and -- leaving the keys in the ignition -- attempted to run inside to use the bathroom. Steps from the hotel's front door, he said he heard someone yell about a man entering his taxi.

"I tried to open the door to stop him, but he got away," Cadet said, standing outside his taxi on Canal Street near the Royal Street intersection.

Witnesses said the taxi crashed into at least six vehicles and a bicyclist before stopping at Canal and Royal. There, two different families spoke with police officers while heavy traffic crawled past the wreck.
