Chico, CA : 17-year-old girl suffered major injuries in crash on Highway 99 on Wednesday October 14 2015
A 17-year-old girl suffered major injuries Wednesday when she was thrown from the rear window of a car that hit a guardrail on Highway 99 in Chico, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The driver, Yuba City resident David Mundinger, 24, was arrested by the CHP on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs, the CHP said.
Mundinger and the other passenger, Yuba City resident Julian Hidaigo, 26, were not injured.
The name of the female passenger, an Oroville resident who was not wearing a seat belt, was not released.
The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Mundinger was driving a Chevrolet Lumina north in the left lane of Highway 99, south of Highway 32, when he saw traffic stopped in front of him.
To avoid a collision, he veered his vehicle into the right lane and entered the shoulder. He then steered his vehicle to the left, attempting to re-enter the highway, but overcorrected and lost control.
The car began to spin, traveling back across both lanes of the highway and entering the median, where the right front side of the vehicle struck the guardrail.
The teen was ejected, landing in the left lane of the highway. Meanwhile, the car, after hitting the guardrail, continued to spin out of control, veering back across both northbound lanes before coming to rest down on an embankment along the right shoulder.
