A California Highway Patrol officer received major injuries Tuesday afternoon when a pickup swerved and hit the officer’s motorcycle, triggering a crash on Highway 180 near Clovis Avenue in Fresno.

The crash was reported just before 5:30 p.m. near Clovis Avenue, according to the CHP dispatch log.

CHP Officer Axel Reyes said the officer was pulling over a blue pickup when he was struck by a red pickup that swerved from the fast lane of eastbound Highway 180. The motorcycle hit the center divider and went over the divider. The officer was dumped into the eastbound lane of the freeway. The crash ignited a small brush fire that was quickly extinguished.

The officer was conscious and talking with emergency responders. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where other law enforcement officers and fire crews gathered. The name of the officer was not released Tuesday.

The driver of the red pickup was cooperating with investigators.

Eastbound Highway 180 was closed at Peach Avenue as CHP officers, Fresno Fire Department crews and others responded to the crash, the CHP dispatch log said.

Eastbound traffic was being diverted at the Peach Avenue offramp. Caltrans reported that traffic was backed up to Highway 41.
