CEDAR RAPIDS, IA : Cedar Rapids Police car crashes into gas station during high-speed chase on Sunday, 9th June 2024
A Cedar Rapids Police car crashed into a gas station, sparking a small fire during a police chase on Sunday morning.
Law enforcement began chasing a Cadillac ATS in Johnson County around 4:30 a.m. Cedar Rapids Police got involved as the driver entered the Cedar Rapids area. During the pursuit, an officer lost control of his squad car and hit the back of a gas station, the Phillips 66, on Old Marion Rd NE.
Cedar Rapids Police said the officer was not hurt, but the building and police car sustained damage. The incident sparked a small fire in the building, which Cedar Rapids firefighters extinguished quickly.
No one was inside the building at the time, but the back wall sustained significant damage.
Police terminated the chase after the crash, and the Cadillac driver escaped from officers. Police said they recovered the vehicle a short time and distance later, but officers are still searching for the driver.
