Lewiston, ME : Man charged in hit-and-run death of pregnant girlfriend on Tuesday September 23rd 2014
Maine State Police said the man wanted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in the town of Lewiston on Tuesday has been charged with murder.
State police said Evaristo Deus was taken into custody Wednesday morning at JFK Airport in New York City after he boarded a plane bound for Haiti.
Police said Deus was taken into custody by the New York Port Authority about 10 minutes before the plane was to depart.
"What we think happened yesterday is he drove from Lewiston to Portland, and ditched the car at the University of New England on Stevens Avenue. We suspect he either hopped a bus or a plane to Boston, and headed south," said Maine State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland.
He is being held in New York, and Maine State Police are making arrangements to send two detectives there to question him and begin the process of returning him to Maine.
Deus was the boyfriend of Laudrinha Kubeloso, 32, who was struck by an SUV at the corner of Birch and Howe streets in Lewiston at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said she was four months pregnant.
She later died at the hospital. The case is being investigated as a domestic violence death.
Neighbors said the couple had an unusual relationship.
"She used to come here. She cooks for him, and she used to go there so it looked like the relationship was close, but he told us that was his cousin. She looked like she was pregnant, but she was saying that is just the food," said neighbor Constance Madeda.
Madeda said Kubeloso was a hard worker, holding down jobs at Dunkin Donuts and Walmart.
McCausland said Deus and Kubeloso came to the United States from Angola about a year ago. McCausland said Deus had ties to New York before moving to Lewiston, but officials aren't sure if the couple knew each other before moving to Maine.
"The dynamics of their relationship is something we'll obviously be looking at, but I don't have a lot of details at this point," said McCausland.
