Willcox, AZ : A San Simon man lost his life in an ATV accident on April, Saturday 15th 2017
A San Simon man lost his life Saturday night in an ATV accident two miles south of North Parker Road.
At about 10 p.m., April 15, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) received report of an all terrain vehicle accident two miles south of 1700 North Park Road, south of San Simon, said CCSO Spokeswoman Carol Capas.
Sheriff's deputies and the San Simon Fire Department responded to the scene, finding 26-year-old Tye Humphreys trapped beneath an overturned ATV. Medics on scene determined that Humphreys was deceased, she said.
San Simon firefighters told deputies that a passenger, 43-year-old Randall Bernard, of Safford, had reportedly left the area, walking toward a residence to get help. Medical personnel went to the residence to find Bernard and see if he had any injuries, Capas said.
Bernard was airlifted to a Tucson hospital for treatment of his injuries, she said.
Capas described the location of the accident as “a washed out trail that is used by ATVs and was difficult to gain access to with any other vehicles.”
Initial investigation indicates that the ATV was on a dirt track and hit a three-foot dip in the trail, causing the ATV to go airborne before losing control and turning onto the left side, she said.
Neither Humphreys nor Bernard were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, Capas said.
The Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation, she said.
A celebration of Humphreys' life will be held tomorrow (Friday, April 21), at 2 p.m. at the San Simon School gym.
According to Humphreys' funeral notice, “anyone who would like to say a few words or have a letter to read is welcome to do so. Please let us know before Friday.”
