Effingham County, GA : Hit-and-run driver leads police on chase, wrecks five vehicles in Effingham on Wednesday, 1th March, 2020

A hit-and-run driver who led police on a chase in Effingham County Wednesday afternoon apparently struck stop sticks and crashed into a sheriff’s patrol car and two trucks, wrecking a total of five vehicles before he was done.

Derrick Powell, 40, was arrested and was being held in the county jail on a long list of charges, including: fleeing from police, reckless driving, drunken driving, probation violation, open container, weaving, hit-and-run, speeding, driving while license suspended or revoked and aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, according to jail records.

His hometown and mug shot were not immediately available.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Gena Sullivan said Powell, driving a Crown Victoria, struck a Ford Explorer at McCall and Blue Jay roads at about 3:15 p.m. and left the scene of the accident.

When authorities caught up with him, he led them on a chase. Sullivan said he avoided some stop sticks but may have struck one set because he was driving on a rim when he ran into a sheriff’s patrol car that was blocking traffic on Ga. 21 at S. Laurel St. in Springfield.

A yellow pickup truck and a wrecker were also involved in the crash.
