Pennfield Township, MI : Two high school students killed after car crashes into tree in southern Michigan on Thursday afternoon, December 10, 2015

Authorities say two high school students have died following a crash in southern Michigan.

The Calhoun County sheriff's department says the 16- and 17-year-old girls were students at Pennfield High School and died at the scene of the Thursday afternoon crash in Pennfield Township, near Battle Creek.

Pennfield Schools Superintendent Tim Everett tells the Battle Creek Enquirer that the victims Kaleigh Woodman and Sabrina Almaraz both were juniors.

Everett says grief counselors will be available at school. MLive.com reports varsity basketball games scheduled for Friday at Pennfield High will be rescheduled.

Investigators say the girls' car went out of control as it crested a hill, left the roadway and struck a tree. Deputies say speed appears to be a factor. Parents of the victims arrived at the scene shortly afterward.
