Chicago, IL : At least 9 hurt in crash on Dan Ryan Expressway on Tuesday, 6th September 2016
At least nine people were hurt in a three-car crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side early Tuesday, authorities said.
The cars collided around 12:35 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 94 near 93rd Street, according to Illinois State Police.
State police said nine people were hurt. Chicago Fire Department media officials said 10 people were hurt. Seven people were in critical condition, and three others were in fair condition, according to fire officials.
The victims were taken to different hospitals, and their ages and genders were not immediately available.
The northbound lane of the Dan Ryan were closed for several hours before reopening by about 4:30 a.m.
Chron Cross, who lives next to the expressway, said she was sleeping when her 12-year-old niece woke her up.
“I heard a loud boom. It was really loud,” said Serenity Cross, adding that the window of her room faces the expressway. “Then I heard someone yelling, ‘The car is on fire! The car is on fire.’”
Cross and her niece stood on a pedestrian bridge across the Dan Ryan early Tuesday along with about a dozen other neighbors and drivers who stopped to see what happened.
Chron Cross said when she walked out of her home she saw one of the cars on fire. Someone picked up a fire extinguisher and tried to put it out, she said.
Cross said she saw one person lay unconscious near the east wall of the expressway.
At the scene of the crash, two children were taken into ambulances on gurneys. They were both sitting up and conscious.
“It’s awful,” Chron Cross said. “I hope everyone makes it.”
