COAL TOWNSHIP, PA : Three injured in crash on Rt. 61 on Wednesday, February 15th 2017

Three local residents were hospitalized Wednesday after being injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 61 at the intersection near Burger King.

Becky Wyland, 27, who was operating a 2002 silver Oldsmobile Bravada, and her brother and passenger, Robert Wyland, 33, both of Ranshaw, were transported to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, where they underwent emergency room treatment before being released.

Becky Wyland reportedly suffered a leg injury, while her brother suffered a head injury.

Carol Shinskie, 68, of Gowen City, who was driving a maroon 2006 Ford Explorer, was removed from her vehicle on a gurney after being placed in a neck brace. She also underwent emergency room treatment and was admitted to the hospital, a spokeswoman said Wednesday night.

Ambulances from AREA Services transported the victims.

Coal Township Patrolman Jason Adams, who is continuing his investigation, reported Becky Wyland was driving south on Route 61 at 11:51 a.m. when she failed to stop for a red light, causing her vehicle to collide with Shinskie’s Explorer at the intersection. Adams said Shinskie’s vehicle, which reportedly had just left Burger King, was traveling east at the jughandle and had a green light in her direction.

Shinskie’s sport utility vehicle, which sustained extensive front-end damage, came to rest facing west in the eastbound lane of the jughandle against a curb. The vehicle’s airbags deployed, causing smoke to fill the vehicle.

The Bravada, which sustained extensive damage to its right front and was leaking fluids, came to a halt in the southbound lane of Route 61 near a concrete divider.

Kevin Brokenshire, of Coal Run, an operating room nurse at Geisinger Medical Center who came upon the crash, provided assistance to Shinskie until emergency medical services personnel arrived.

Also assisting Adams were firefighters from Brady and East End fire companies, Coal Township Rescue Squad and fire police.

The Explorer was towed by East End Auto Sales, of Coal Township, while the Bravada was hauled from the scene by Shawn’s Auto Sales, of Shamokin.

The accident caused southbound traffic on Route 61 to be reduced to one lane for about an hour until fluids and debris were cleared.
