Gig Harbor, WA : Teen killed in crash near Bonney Lake identified on Sunday, 11th September 2016
An 18-year-old killed Sunday after being thrown from a car that hit a tree near Bonney Lake has been identified as McKenzie Martin.
Three teenage girls were inside a 2016 Kia Forte traveling west on 160th Street East just before 6 p.m. when the driver, also 18, lost control of the car.
The car “jumped a hill at the top and landed out of control at the bottom” near 186th Avenue East, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The Kia struck a tree, and Martin, who was in the front passenger seat, was thrown out. She was not wearing a seat belt.
Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two girls were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said excessive speed was a factor in the crash. The speed limit in that area is 25 mph.
