A man sitting on a Staten Island park bench was crushed to death Wednesday when a drunken driver lost control of her SUV which jumped a curb and flipped over on top of
him, witnesses said.David Craig, 57, a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam, died at the scene despite the valiant attempts of good Samaritans who rushed to save his
life.“He was just trying to go home,” Craig’s distraught father, Edward Craig, 83, of Staten Island, told the Daily News. “He was minding his business, sitting on a
bench, waiting to catch a bus.”The tragedy unfolded about 2 p.m. at Tompkinsville Park — just 400 feet from where Eric Garner was put in a lethal chokehold during a
July 17, 2014, confrontation with cops.raig, who had just left an appointment at a nearby food stamps social services office, was sitting on a bench alongside the park
when two cars nearly collided, sending one on a deadly path, witnesses said.The driver of a black Nissan SUV lost control when she tried to avoid a car turning in
front of her at the intersection of Bay St. and Victory Blvd., witnesses said. The SUV jumped the curb and rolled onto Craig, crushing him.The SUV driver, Oriamor
Benson, 25, of Park Hill, was taken into custody and charged with driving while ability impaired, a lesser charge than driving while intoxicated.John Childs, 58, of
St. George said he and other witnesses rushed to help the woman inside the SUV, not knowing someone was trapped underneath.“The first thing we did was get the lady out
of the SUV and then we saw a pair of legs” sticking out from under the vehicle, Childs said. He and other witnesses pulled Craig out from under the SUV.Craig was taken
by ambulance to Richmond University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
