Columbus, AL : Buena Vista man identified in fatal two-vehicle wreck on I-185 on Tuesday, 25th October 2016

A Buena Vista, Ga., man is dead following the two-vehicle wreck that occurred Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 185 in Columbus, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed.

Charlie Sampson, 77, was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma at 1:47 p.m. in the emergency room at Midtown Medical Center. His body will be transported to the crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy, Bryan said.

Police said Sampson was the driver of a northbound 1996 Dodge pickup truck when he pulled off the road about 12:40 p.m. to pick up a ladder in the roadway. While his pickup was stopped, another northbound Toyota Venza struck the right rear bumper of the truck.

The pickup wasn’t equipped with airbags. Sampson wasn’t using a seat belt but two passengers in the vehicle were strapped in. Occupants in the Toyota also were using seat belts.

Columbus Fire & EMS said Tuesday afternoon that traffic was delayed in the northbound lane of Interstate 185 as a result of the incident, which happened between Macon Road and Buena Vista Road exits.

The northbound lane of I-185 was closed until about 6:30 p.m. Traffic in the southbound lane remained free-flowing. Drivers were encouraged to take an alternative route until the vehicles were cleared.
