Portsmouth, VA : Driver dies in a fatal crash in Churchland area of Portsmouth early Thursday morning, May 5, 2016

Authorities are working to determine what caused a fatal vehicle accident that took place early Thursday morning in Portsmouth.

Officers were alerted of a serious single-vehicle incident that happened just before 3:45 a.m. at River Shore Rd. and Merrifields Blvd. in Churchland.

The victim, a female driver, who was the only occupant of a brown sedan, died at the scene.

Police have closed River Shore Rd. between Swannanoa Dr. and Oakhurst as they investigate.

No other details have been released at this time, including the victim's identity.
