Single-car crash snarls U.S. 278

A woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident in Bluffton late Saturday that temporarily shut down U.S. 278.

The woman crashed into the westbound tree line at Hilton Head National Drive shortly before 8:40 p.m., according to the Bluffton Township Fire District and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Officers closed the highway in both directions to allow an air ambulance to land. It took rescuers about 30 minutes to free the woman from the vehicle. She was flown to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, a deputy said.

Her condition and identity was unavailable late Saturday.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.

U.S. 278 was reopened about 9:35 p.m.
