Austin, TX :Driver in deadly I-35 crash was intoxicated on Saturday, June 11th 2015
Police say the man who crashed his car on an Interstate 35 frontage road Saturday night, killing a female passenger, was drunk.Zachary Rene Torres, 25, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony, in the deadly crash. Torres told police he was late for work after tubing, where he drank several beers and Fireball liquor, the arrest affidavit states.Police said Torres was driving his mother’s Kia sedan northbound on I-35 near the exit for Onion Creek Parkway in South Austin. Torres lost control of the car, slid off the highway, went over the median onto the frontage road and then struck a pole. The impact split the pole in half.Torres’ passenger, Marynn Vilarino, 24, died after being transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge, according to the affidavit.Two witnesses spoke with police. One witnesses estimated Torres was driving about 90 mph near the time of the crash. Another witness told police he approached the vehicle shortly after the crash, and Torres told him he was drunk, according to the arrest warrant.Torres told police, “if he was driving faster than 80 it was because he was late for work,” the arrest warrant states. Torres also told police he lost control of his vehicle while trying to steer around a car that had cut him off, according to the warrant.
