Upland, CA : Fatal crash leaves vehicle wrapped around a tree and engine in road in Upland on Wednesday, 26th October 2016
Police said alcohol and high speed might have been factors in a fatal crash on Euclid Avenue Wednesday that left a black vehicle wrapped around a tree and the vehicle’s engine in the middle of the road.
The southbound lanes of Euclid from Ninth to Eighth streets remained shut down at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, almost three hours after the crash was reported. Firefighters were using extrication tools to help remove the victim’s body from the car so coroner’s staff could take it from the scene. It appeared the driver, a man, may have been street racing, said Upland police Sgt. John Poole. Witnesses told police two cars were reportedly seen racing from Foothill Boulevard. One car — police couldn’t confirm a description — pulled ahead, while the other hit the railroad tracks south of A Street and lost control, the sergeant said.
The driver died after the black car hit a curb and “center-punched” a tree in front of a Mexican restaurant, Poole said.
The smell of alcohol in the crashed car suggested it might have been factor in the crash, said Sgt. Marc Simpson. He did not know other details about the driver shortly after 7 p.m.
Simpson said the other vehicle fled the scene.
The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m., Poole said.
