Jon Daryl Smith, 28, of Onamia was charged April 27 with three felonies and two gross misdemeanors after allegedly crashing two stolen vehicles and leaving his brother at a crash scene.

According to the criminal complaint filed by the Kanabec County Attorney’s Office, Kanabec County deputies responded to a report of a stolen truck in northern Kanabec County at about 10 p.m.

The caller said he saw a man driving his truck out of his driveway. The caller got into a second vehicle and attempted to follow his truck.

While chasing after his truck, the caller observed a minivan in a water-filled ditch. The minivan was later reported stolen from a property in Mille Lacs County.

When deputies arrived they found Smith’s brother in the van. He was suffering from hypothermia. He was taken to FirstLight Health System hospital and later airlifted to North Memorial Hospital.

After responding to the van crash, deputies received a report of a second crash.

It appears as though Smith and his brother drove the stolen minivan, crashed it into a water-filled ditch, Smith left his brother in the van, took a pickup truck from a nearby property and continued to drive until crashing the truck near the intersection of 300th Ave. and Uniform Street.

Smith was ejected from the vehicle and according to the criminal complaint, was bleeding and attempting to leave the scene by flagging down other motorists.
