Miami-Dade County, FL : Man killed after car crashes, catches fire on Florida's Turnpike on Friday, February 6, 2015
A man is dead after a fiery crash on Florida's Turnpike in Miami-Dade County.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the crash occurred about 3:30 a.m. Friday.
Karla Huaman said she was driving south when a man driving a white Infiniti tried to pass her. Instead, the car struck hers and he lost control, ending up on the right shoulder. The impact was so powerful that the car knocked down a tree and then caught fire.
"It's crazy, so crazy," Huaman told Local 10 News.
Huaman said she also lost control of her car and somehow ended up in the northbound lanes. She said smoke was coming out of her car, so she jumped out.
"(I) just prayed to God that there (were) no cars coming because I literally jumped," she said.
Huaman walked away from the crash unscathed, but the driver of the other car suffered severe burns and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The Tennessee man's identity hasn't been released pending notification of next of kin.
Huaman said she was only thinking of one person at the time of the crash -- her mother.
"I just wanted to see her again, you know," she said. "That's it."
Traffic on the turnpike was shut down between Southwest 112th Avenue and 137th Avenue in either direction for about four hours after the crash.
