Milford, DE : Mario E. Nelson, 58, killed and three other people injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Milford on Tuesday morning, April 19, 2016
Mario E. Nelson, a 58-year-old man from Harrington, was killed and three other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash this morning on Route 1 in Milford, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
The crash took place at around 7:15 a.m. as Nelson was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla eastbound on N.E. Front Street extension approaching a stop sign at the intersection with Route 1.
Melissa L. Mallet, 35, of Magnolia, was driving a 2013 Lincoln MKZ southbound on Route 1 in the left lane. The Corolla failed to remain stopped at the stop sign for unknown reasons and entered into the intersection where it was struck on the driver’s side door by the Lincoln’s front bumper.
Both vehicles then rotated counter clockwise and the Corolla traveled in a southwest direction where it came to a stop in the median. The Lincoln continued southbound rotating 90 degrees before it came to a stop facing eastbound on the east edge of Route 1.
Nelson was properly restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nelson’s 29-year-old daughter was wearing a seat belt in the passenger’s seat and was flown by Delaware State Police aviation to Christiana Medical Center where she was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.
Mallet was properly restrained and was removed from the scene by emergency workers and taken to Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital where she was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.
Her 14-year-old son was properly restrained and was also taken to Milford Memorial where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.
The State Police collision reconstruction unit is continuing its investigation into the crash. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be contributing factors.
Route 1 southbound was closed at N.E. 10th Street for around four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
