A Donnellson man has died from injuries he sustained in an SUV-versus-tractor accident at 3:10 p.m. Friday.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, 62-year-old Steven W. Wilson was northbound near milemarker 27 on Highway 218 on a John Deere tractor, hauling a three-wing mower. Caleb Z. Hathaway, 19, of Kahoka, Mo., who was northbound in a 2011 Kia Sportage, said he didn’t see the tractor until he was right behind it, and swerved to avoid a collision. Hathaway’s vehicle struck the rear end of the mower.
The tractor overturned, blocking the highway, and Wilson’s head hit the ground. Lee County EMS advised Wilson was unconscious when they arrived. He was airlifted to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., where he died this morning.
Hathaway was cited for following too closely. He was taken by LCEMS to Fort Madison Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Both vehicles were totaled.
Services for Wilson are pending at Schmitz Funeral Home of Donnellson.
