WASILLA, AK : Wasilla woman in critical condition after crash on Wednesday, January 4th 2017

A 65-year old Wasilla woman remains in critical condition following an early Wednesday morning, two-vehicle accident on Palmer Wasilla Highway.

According to Alaska State Troopers (AST), Betty Hein was the sole passenger of a 2013 Ford F-150 which was struck by a Ford F-650 in front of Diversified Tire near North Jessica Brooke Circle around 6:52 a.m.

Troopers said investigation revealed a tire on Rodgers' vehicle caught the snow bank on the shoulder which resulted in his losing control and the vehicle crossing the centerline. Troopers said the F-650 struck the F-150 nearly head-on. Hein had to be extricated from the vehicle, police said.

AST online dispatch first stated both vehicles caught fire in the mishap which closed the highway for approximately 45 minutes. However Ken Barkley, Mat-Su Borough emergency services director said it was his understanding that only one vehicle did, the tow truck. It's driver, 27-year old Virgil Rodgers of Palmer, was not injured in the mishap.

Barkley said Central EMS and Rescue and Central Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene. AST reported Hein was transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and that due to the nature of her injury, next of kin notified.

Troopers' investigation into the incident is ongoing.
