Phoenix, AZ : 1 killed after strong winds blow over big rigs along Interstate 10 on the freeway about 60 miles west of Phoenix on Wednesday, 4th September 2019

A man was killed and another person was injured after strong winds blew over six big rigs and caused multiple crashes along the Interstate 10 west of Tonopah Wednesday night, the state's Department of Public Safety said.

Six commercial trucks pulling box trailers rolled over on the freeway about 60 miles west of Phoenix at around 8:30 p.m., DPS said.

Two trucks rolled over on the westbound side while four rolled over on the eastbound side, DPS said Wednesday evening.

The affected lanes were cleared by 5 a.m. Thursday.

Wind speeds in the area at the time of the crashes were between 30 and 40 mph, National Weather Service meteorologist Matthew Hirsch said.
