Marysville,CA : Drivers in Highway 99 crash identified on may, Friday 19th 2017
The two drivers killed in a head-on crash on Highway 99 on Thursday evening were from Marysville and Live Oak, the Sutter County Coroner’s Office said Friday.
Jeffar Salem, 68, of Marysville, was driving the 2002 Dodge Neon that was shoved back into the guardrail on the east shoulder of Highway 99, north of Yuba City. Its front end was smashed in.
Tyrone Oppy, 44, of Live Oak, was the driver of the 2008 Chevy Silverado that overturned and landed on its roof.
Oppy was ejected from the vehicle. Both drivers were declared dead at the scene.
According to the California Highway Patrol, witnesses said Oppy was driving his Silverado “erratically” south on Highway 99 just after 6 p.m. It’s unclear why Oppy was speeding, but the Silverado allegedly crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic – one car was able to swerve away, but Salem’s Neon – traveling northbound – collided head-on.
Both drivers were traveling alone, and neither were wearing seatbelts, the CHP said. In a later report, the CHP said drugs or alcohol were being investigated as factors in the crash.
This was Yuba-Sutter’s 14th fatal collision this year, according to CHP Capt. Shon Harris, resulting in 17 deaths.
