A pedestrian hit and killed Tuesday morning on North Du Pont Highway near New Castle has been identified as a 78-year-old man from Delaware City.His name is being withheld until his family is notified, state police said.The man was walking east and trying to cross southbound lanes of the highway (U.S. 13), south of Basin Road (Del. 141), when he stepped into the path of a tractor-trailer, Master Cpl. Jeffrey R. Hale said.Truck driver John Davis, 60, of Westville, New Jersey, “braked sharply and swerved to his left,” trying to avoid hitting the pedestrian, Hale said.The pedestrian, however, “fell into the roadway, where he was then struck by the tractor-trailer,” he said. The crash was reported at 6:38 a.m.New Castle County paramedics, who found the pedestrian lying in the road, pronounced him dead at the scene, paramedic Sgt. Michael A. McColley said.The truck driver was taken to Christiana Hospital for evaluation, he said.Southbound lanes of the highway were closed between Basin Road and Christiana Road (Del. 273) for about 21/2 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared, Hale said.The fatal crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
