More than 30 students hurt in an Iowa school bus rollover crash Thursday are recovering from their injuries on Friday, and sharing their stories.About 32 students were riding on the bus during the crash near Manchester and were taken to the hospital, KCRG-TV reports. So I was sitting on the bus with my best friend and she screamed, ‘Oh my gosh!,'" Jasmine Rossi told KCRG-TV, a ninth-grade student at West Delaware High School. "I looked and the car smashed right into the seat I was sitting at and the bus flipped two times.Everyone was screaming and all of the younger kids were really hurt and I started helping the younger kids, even though I was hurt myself," she said.A farmer happened to be out in the corn field and came running over to help guide the students out of the rear emergency exit, Rossi said. Some 34 people were treated from the crash. The State Patrol identified the driver of the SUV as Monte Klink, 41, of Arlington. As many nurses could respond, did respond," Heather Ries told KCRG. She is the chief nursing officer at Regional Medical Center. "We are a small hospital but we are mighty in so many ways. We had the human resources to handle the situation."
Ries described most of the 32 students as "walking wounded" and Rossi said that she suffered cuts on her back and forehead. Ambulance crews gathered the more seriously injured while a second school bus took the remaining students to Regional Medical Center."We had some guardian angels watching over those students," said Ries after she learned that the bus flipped upon impact. "They did a really good job. One thing I want to say about those students is they were very calm. They did a wonderful job of keeping themselves composed, from the very little to the older, they did a wonderful job. The parents were so patient. They were patient for us, to process their child, check their child out so we could identify the right patient with the right parents.Rossi and her mother left the hospital a little more than three hours after the crash.
The crash was reported about 2 p.m. some three miles northeast of Manchester near 195th Street and 200th Avenue.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Department said the students were taken to the Delaware County Regional Medical Center in Manchester for evaluation.Dr. Kristen Rickey, superintendent of the West Delaware School District, told KCRG that most students sustained minor injuries. Full details have not yet been released about the students' injuries. The driver of the SUV was also taken to a hospital.State Trooper Jon Stickney said the West Delaware School District bus collided with an SUV, causing the bus to do a full roll and landed back on its tires.
The bus had the right of way and the driver of the SUV failed to yield, Iowa State Patrol said.
