Columbus,OH : Saturday rain caused several crashes, highway closure on September, Saturday 2nd 2017
Columbus-areas highways were shut down at least four times on Saturday by crashes on rain-soaked roads that frustrated drivers and clogged traffic until mid-afternoon.
The ramp from Interstate 670, a highway slicing east-west through Downtown Columbus, to northbound Route 315 twice was shut down Saturday morning due to crashes. The first time was at 7:30 a.m., the second about two hours after that. In the later crash, a car went 15 feet off of the road into some trees.
Interstate 70 east where Route 315 south becomes I-71 south was shut down at 1:39 p.m. after a semi driver was involved in a crash.
Police dispatchers wouldn’t provide information and the Columbus Police spokesman didn’t immediately return a Saturday email, but police scanner traffic indicated the truck — operating without a trailer — twice bounced off of guardrails, crossed the center line and struck another car. Officers at the scene, scanner communications noted, believe the truck driver then jumped from the truck, allowing it to roll driverless to a stop farther down the highway. Neither the driver nor the passenger of the car hit by the truck were injured.
