Ripley, MS : Leroy Derrick, 93, killed in ATV accident on Highway 4 in Ripley on May 25, 2014
A Sunday afternoon accident involving an all-terrain vehicle and an SUV killed a 93-year-old man from Ripley, Mississippi.
Leroy Derrick, a retired constable, was trying to cross Highway 4 near County Road 548 on his ATV when he drove into the path of the SUV.
The accident happened around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday.
Officials say Derrick died on the scene. The driver of the SUV was not hurt.
On Memorial Day, people in Tippah County mourned the loss of a former county constable who served the area for more than three decades. Derrick served as South Tippah County constable for so long he has signatures and plaques from several decades worth of governors.
The Army Veteran was killed after his daughter's birthday lunch.
"I said … 'I want you to come and eat with us,' and so he did, and I got to sit by him," said daughter Ina Ruth Harris.
Harris says her son had just passed his grandfather on Highway 4 heading towards Ripley.
"Matt blowed at him and waved, and granddaddy waved back," she said.
That's when Derrick tried to cross the highway.
"He said 'Momma, all the way home, every time I looked in the rear view window I could see granddaddy going up in the air.' It's really going to bother him," said Harris.
Derrick is the second person to die over the weekend in Mississippi from an ATV-related crash. Funeral arrangements are still in the works.
