OTTUMWA, IA :A motorcycle and a car collided on April, Thursday 20th 2017
A motorcycle and a car collided Thursday morning, resulting in one serious injury.
Firefighters and EMTs worked to immobilize a male motorcyclist flat on his back in the right lane of Church Street. Police blocked traffic in both directions.
"The motorcycle was traveling southbound on Church Street," said Lt. Jason Bell, one of the OPD officers who responded to the scene. "And the vehicle was pulling out of a parking lot. No citations have been issued at this particular point."
Injuries to the rider appeared serious. The man, however, was conscious. The biker verbally expressed his displeasure whenever rescuers tried to move him.
On one side of the car and motorcycle, police investigators began taking photographs and documenting the scene. On the other side of the downed bike, emergency personnel worked quickly and calmly to help the man.
They soon had him on a gurney and loaded into the back of an ORMICS ambulance. The man was first transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
"He had some pretty significant injuries," Bell said, "and he was life flighted."
The most recent update he'd received placed the motorcycle rider in "critical but stable" condition.
Two hours after the accident, Church Street was still blocked by the Ottumwa Police Department. There were more investigators, and they still appeared to be recording and reviewing the crash scene.
"The cause of the crash remains under investigation," Bell said.
