Laurens,SC : Suspect in custody after pursuit, stolen Public Works truck crashes in Laurens County on February, Thursday 8th 2018
An investigation is underway after a Laurens Public Works truck was stolen and later crashed on Ora Road Thursday morning, according to the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said that the truck was stolen from the Public Works Department. Laurens Police later spotted the truck in the county.
According to police, an officer in an unmarked vehicle began following the suspect after they passed the truck on Highway 221. Police said once the suspect realized he was being followed, he took off and the officer initiated a pursuit.
The chase lasted seven miles before stop sticks were deployed, officers said.
Police said the driver's side tires hit the sticks, causing the driver to lose control. According to officers, the driver overcorrected, crossed the center line, and hit a tree that caused him to spin out into a field.
The suspect was flown by chopper to Greenville Health System, police said.
Officers said the driver was released from the hospital and was currently being booked into the Laurens County Detention Center.
The suspect was charged by police with failure to stop and motor vehicle theft, officers said.
Highway Patrol charges are still pending.
