Arlington, MA : Car crashes onto bridge in Arlington on Friday, January 23, 2015

Police in Arlington said a car was going so fast on Route 2 it left the roadway, went up an embankment, then went airborne before clipping the guardrail and smashing into another car on the Pleasant Street bridge.

"It was an unbelievable crash,” an Arlington officer said. "In my 15 years of being a policeman I've never seen a crash like this."

Accident reconstruction teams were on scene trying to figure out how this accident happened.

Officers with flashlights followed the vehicle's possible path from Route 2 up through the trees.

"All the circumstances of the crash. The way it left the highway. The way it jumped such a steep embankment. Landed on top of a guardrail and then landed on top of another car. Unbelievable,” an officer said.

Police said there were very few witnesses. But one person said the car came out of nowhere.

In this case, that's pretty accurate. Considering the small Ford Fiesta with Rhode Island license plates began on the highway at least 30 feet below.

"It was a tough scene to arrive on. The fire departments from Arlington and Belmont both did a fantastic job by cutting the people out of the car and rushed them right to the hospital,” an officer said.

The drivers from both cars were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Police are still investigating what cause the crash.
