A 17-year-old San Pedro girl was killed and her cousin was injured when a wrong-way driver crashed into their car on the 91 Freeway in Carson, family members and authorities said Friday.Sarah Banuelos, a senior at Port of Los Angeles High School in San Pedro, died in the crash late Thursday, said the girl’s aunt, Laura Spencer-Morris.The California Highway Patrol said Banuelos was a passenger in a vehicle headed west on the 91 Freeway at Central Avenue when a vehicle going the wrong way crashed into them in the carpool lane.Banuelos was killed. Her cousin, who was at the wheel, suffered a fractured ankle. Her cousin’s baby suffered scratches but was otherwise unhurt, Spencer-Morris said. The driver of the other vehicle was hospitalized. Why the person was driving the wrong way was unknown, but alcohol was not believed to be a factor, the CHP said. Officers did not disclose the name, gender or medical condition of that driver.
Banuelos, who lived in South Shores, was returning with her cousin and the baby from Disneyland, Spencer-Morris said.
Before POLAHS, Sarah attended Dodson Middle School in Rancho Palos Verdes and South Shores Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts, her aunt said.
She was a really wonderful girl who always had a smile,” her aunt said. “She loved music, to sing and play the ukulele. She was the oldest sibling of four; she had three younger brothers.”
Spencer-Morris described her as “truly a wonderful young lady.”
It is a tragic loss for us all,” she said.
School was on an early dismissal day Friday and word about Banuelos’ death came in the afternoon. High school officials declined comment, waiting to talk with her family. A brief message on the school’s Facebook site offered counseling to students over the weekend.
POLAHS Students: If you need someone to talk to or just be listened to, teachers and staff will be on campus Saturday from 8:00-3:00,” the website said.
