Phoenix, AZ : Driver arrested after 2 killed in crash in Phoenix on Monday, November 14th 2016

Phoenix police have arrested a 26-year-old driver in connection with a crash that left two people dead early Monday.

Police say Edgar T. Valenzuela was intoxicated and speeding when he crashed a BMW into the back of a Honda occupied Rene Martinez, 19, and Marcos Alfonso Valdez Sanchez, 18.

Both cars were headed north on 35th Avenue and had just passed Dunlap Avenue when the collision occurred at about 2:20 a.m., according to a Phoenix police statement.

Police said fire crews had to use cutting tools to remove Martinez and Sanchez from the vehicle. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Valenzuela and his passenger, another 26-year-old man, suffered minor injuries in the crash and were not taken to hospitals, police said.

Valenzuela was booked into a Maricopa County jail Monday morning on suspicion of two counts of second-degree murder and one count of endangerment.
