Brookings, SD : Minnesota man dies after police chase, crash on Interstate 29 near the U.S. 14 bypass on the northern edge of Brookings on Sunday, Sep 13, 2015

A Minnesota man was killed after authorities said he fled from a Highway Patrol trooper across the South Dakota-Minnesota border in Brookings and crashed.

Douglas Bixby, 58, of Windom, died in the accident, said the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

At about 11:20 p.m., the patrol received a report of an erratic driver on Interstate 29 near the U.S. 14 bypass on the northern edge of Brookings. The driver of a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria fled when a trooper tried to make a traffic stop.

Speeds reached up to 80 mph after the driver turned eastbound onto the U.S. 14 bypass. The vehicle did not stop at the intersection of U.S. 14 and the bypass, left the road and crashed into a ditch embankment and tree.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor, said the patrol.
