Chicago, IL : Driver killed in tanker truck crash I-75 on Thursday night, August 20th 2015
The driver of a tanker truck who died Thursday night after a fiery crash on I-75 in Lincoln Park has been identified as Roddy Blaine Winn, 53, of Detroit.
Winn suffered burns on more than 95 percent of his body in the crash early Thursday on I-75 near Outer Drive, according to the Michigan State Police.
Police say Winn was traveling south on I-75 when he lost control of the tanker, struck the median wall and flipped onto the northbound lanes.
The tanker was carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline.
Winn worked for Corrigan Oil Co., based in Brighton, for 12 years, according to a spokesman for the company. The company released a statement Friday offering condolences to the man’s wife and two children:
We are deeply saddened by the loss of a longtime member of the Corrigan family,” President Mike Corrigan, said in the statement. “Corrigan Oil has been family owned for over 50 years and considers every employee to be a part of that family. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with the driver’s wife and two daughters during these tough times.”
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-75 were shut down after the accident. The southbound side reopened several hours later. The Michigan Department of Transportation hopes to reopen the northbound side by 5 a.m. Monday, a spokeswoman said.
The crash marks the third fiery tanker crash that closed a major Detroit-area roadway this year.
