Granger, IN : One person killed and three more injured after a semitrailer ran into three vehicles in eastern St. Joseph County on Friday, July 15, 2016

One person was killed and three more were hurt today after a semitrailer ran into three vehicles that were stopped in a construction zone along the Indiana Toll Road in eastern St. Joseph County.

Police said the crash happened about 1:15 p.m. near the 85 mile marker, just west of the Elkhart County line.

Indiana State Police Trooper Artie Smith said one semi was stopped in the westbound lanes, with an SUV pulling a U-Haul trailer behind the semi and a small car behind the SUV.

A second semi, also traveling west, failed to slow down and slammed into the small car at full speed, Smith said, pushing the car through the U-Haul trailer and for another 300 feet before coming to a stop.

When police arrived, the second semi was on top of the small car, with two people trapped inside, Smith said. The driver of the car, an older man, was hospitalized. The passenger, who appeared to be a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV and the driver of the semi that rear-ended the other vehicles also were taken to an area hospital. None of the people involved had been identified Friday afternoon.
