Minneapolis, MN : Four people killed in 2-vehicle crash on icy highway in Aitkin County on Saturday, December 26, 2015
Four people were killed in a crash on an icy highway in Aitkin County of northeastern Minnesota on Saturday, the State Patrol said, one of hundreds of accidents reported amid a winter storm that left a layer of snow across a large part of the state.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. on Highway 65, south of Highway 18, the Patrol said on its accident report site. All four of the dead were in a 2001 Mazda Tribute SUV that collided with a 1995 Chevrolet Suburban SUV south of the town of McGrath. The site is a rural area about 85 miles north of Minneapolis.
Names and hometowns of the dead were not immediately released. Two people in the Suburban, a 22-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy, both from McGregor, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The Patrol said further details on the crash would be released as they became available. The accident report described the highway as icy at the time.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation said roads in that part of northeastern Minnesota were snow-covered and slippery, as were highways in portions of central and western Minnesota.
The Patrol said it had responded to over 150 crashes statewide and that nearly 150 more vehicles that had spun out or slid off slippery roads as of just before noon.
The National Weather Service said Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport had 2 inches of snow by Saturday morning while other parties of the Twin Cities metro area received over 3 inches. Parts of southwestern Minnesota received 8 inches of snow, including Marshall, Redwood Falls and Slayton.
