Four people were injured in a three-vehicle accident Thursday in Williamson County, according to Illinois State Police.
A 2004 Chevrolet Impala driven by Devin A. O'Daniell, 23, of Royalton was eastbound at 12:50 p.m. on Herrin Road, just west of North Greenbriar Road. A 1995 Chevrolet 1500 pickup and a 2009 Buick Enclave were westbound at the same location, with the truck in front. O'Daniell said he dropped a lit cigarette and lost control of his vehicle, which drifted into the westbound lane, sideswiping the truck and striking the Buick head on. All vehicles came to a rest in ditches.
O'Daniell suffered major injuries and was transported to a regional hospital via medical helicopter. Eric Lee McCormack, 46, of West Frankfort was the driver of the truck and was uninjured. Debra K. Perry, 52, of Johnston City was behind the wheel of the Buick and was taken via ambulance to a local hospital with major injuries. Claudia M. Bolivar, 30, of Logan, a passenger in the Impala, suffered non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in the truck, 55-year-old Maureen Odum of West Frankfort suffered non-life threatening injuries.
O'Daniell was charged with improper lane usage. The road was closed for about two hours.
