HARVARD, MA : Car accident leads to water main break on Sunday, 2nd February, 2020

Local residents were relying on delivered cases of water Sunday after a broken fire hydrant led to their town water supply being drained.

Tim Kilhart, director of Harvard’s Department of Public Works, said on Sunday morning that a car hit a fire hydrant in front of The Bromfield School late Saturday night. That accident caused the town’s 310,000 gallon water tank on Bolton Road to be drained.

Harvard Police Detective Daniele Fortunato confirmed the accident happened around 8 p.m. Saturday night and it is still under investigation.

Kilhart said that a new fire hydrant in front of the school has been installed and the DPW is in the process of fixing the town’s water tank. He added that the tank is being tested and will then be refilled. He expects the work to be finished sometime Sunday.

In the meantime, the Harvard Fire Department will be distributing cases of water to local residents for their use.
