La Junta,CO : Missing woman injured in accident on July, Monday 24th 2017
Karen Donkle, of Las Animas, missing since 10:30 Sunday morning, was found about 11:30 a.m. on Monday morning. She was alive and responsive, speaking with rescuers, who at about 12:30 p.m. on Monday were trying to extricate her from the automobile. First task was stabilizing her condition, which Chief Aaron Eveatt said is probably critical.
The family reported on Monday that Donkle had been transported to a hospital in Pueblo with bruises, a broken neck, sternum, rib and back.
Eveatt said the two helicopters nearest the site of the crash were on other calls, but a Flight for Life helicopter did arrive from Colorado Springs. She was flown to Level 2 Trauma in Pueblo.
Eveatt said that since the firetruck and ambulance can’t get into the location, portable units were brought from the station to get her out and treat her. Evidently Donkle, who was traveling north toward La Junta, went off the west side of the road, hit a ditch and traveled along it until reaching about what would have been the front yard of an abandoned house. The weeds are five to seven feet deep where the car is, about 40 yards off Highway 350, about a half mile south of mile marker 71.
On Sunday night and early Monday morning, Donkle’s family posted messages on Facebook asking for any information on her whereabouts.
