Goshen, IN : Kosciusko County officials said a woman was killed on Monday, June 26, 2017
Kosciusko County officials said a woman was killed Monday morning when a tractor-trailer slammed into her vehicle at "highway speed" after the tractor-trailer's driver allegedly fell asleep.
County police officers responded to U.S. 30 and Ind. 19 near the town of Etna Green around 3:40 a.m. Vicki Sue Bartz, 52, South Whitley, was pinned inside her 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, police Sgt. Chad Hill said.
Officials from the Kosciusko County Coroner's Office pronounced Bartz dead at the scene from blunt force trauma injuries.
Hill said a preliminary investigation determined Bartz was traveling west on U.S. 30 when she stopped for a traffic light at the intersection of Ind. 19. A 2015 Freightliner tractor-trailer, driven by Waldemar A. Palys, East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, was also westbound on U.S. 30 in the same lane of traffic when the truck collided into the rear of Bartz’s vehicle at "highway speed," Hill said. Investigators believe Palys may have fallen asleep prior to impact by his own admission.
The investigation is ongoing.
